Summer 2022 : New Art & the ArtWalk

Saying I am excited to return to Artwalk this summer is an understatement. I have new work, new subject matter and am using new mediums. I have been drawing more, and I must confess drawing has always been my first love, but drawings are harder to keep safe. So I turn to the brush, my second love. I often say I draw with paint. On that note here are 2 new small pieces, each is 6”x6” and drawn in acrylic on canvas. 😉

SAVE THE DATE: Artwalk 2022: July 8, 9 & 10th 9am to 5pm daily in Strathcona Edmonton, AB More details to follow in June. Check back with me at http://www.christinehassay.ca

The Games Table is done!

After many late nights and googling of old game board pieces, I have finally completed the Games Table. Yahoo! Games have so many memories attached to them, and they can bring you right back to your childhood. The laughing, the fun and sometimes the flipping of the game board. Games are a big part of life, just like this piece, it is a big one, 30” x 40”. I like working big. (I have another bigger blank one to paint next.). This piece is up for sale on my website, priced at $1200. I hope you enjoy it :).

The games cupboard … WIP

Well I must say that trying to be creative whole social distancing and working from home with a 4.5 year old has proven to be very difficult. It takes a lot of energy and time to plan and fill his days with positivity and to lessen the feeling of having no peers to play with. So when I had time and was able to muster the energy to pick up my brush the other day, I started a really big painting. It is 30” x 40” and will be in acrylic on canvas. The games table painting has begun. I don’t often share works in progress but I felt compelled to for this one. We have to take the little victories when we are overwhelmed. This is a little victory for me. Stay safe! Do recognize any of those game boxes?

I am finally back at the easel with … Marble Marble

After my adventures down the inktober road in the fall my creative endeavours slowed to almost a halt. I have been struggling with some chronic bursitis in my shoulder and healing at that time was taking all my energy. Finally with the new year well underway I am feeling strong and ready to take the canvas and paint back on. To warm up my creative muscles I started with a small piece at 8″ x 10″ of Marbles. Marble Marble to be accurate to its title. My son has a small prize collection of marbles, like we all did and some still may. A simple and beautiful toy, the little glass ball that invokes so much wonder. Check this piece out here

#inktober my journey so far… day 9

I have never taken the inktober challenge as I have this year. A target for each day and a theme to help guide me through 31 days. I am almost 1/3 of the way in and so far so good! I know the days will come when it’s going to be hard, but I am glad I have decided to do it. Sometimes a challenge is helpful in getting the ideas and creativity flowing.

Today’s candy… RUNTS! A classic for any 80’s kid. The pressed powder fruit candies that made you squish your lips funny with each tart bite! I loved them.

The Power of Greyskull!

Late last night I was able to complete He-man & Battle-Cat. My little brother was a serious fan of He-man. I clearly remember him wheeling his giant plastic sword around inciting the power of greyskull. Having a 4 year old around re enacting similar scenes shakes of the cobwebs off of old memories and they flood back in as clear as ever. I hope I bring a touch of that feeling with these still life pieces.

Artwalk 2019 is this weekend. Check out the details and my new location HERE on 105street just south of 81Ave.

Green Army Men

I don’t know if you can get more classic than the green army men.  These gentlemen have been on my to do list for awhile, so when the season of sickness past they were the first to hit the canvas.  The green army man has probably seen more than his share of battles, more than most toys I imagine. They made their debut in 1938 by Bergen Toy & Novelty Co. They have changed very little over time, helmet adjustments and poses but the army man still stands strong.

He will be available for sale on my website next week (24″ x 30″ Acrylic $320)

Sketching for my son

The new year brought in the cold and a series of colds that plagued my family for weeks. I have been too busy battling the runny nose to have the chance to put the brush to the canvas. This week I got that chance and boy did that feel good. During this forced down time I did get a chance to sketch, specifically for my son. When my son was born I started to keep journals for him. Writing in it things we do, things he likes, and drawing for him.  This year I cracked open the pages of the 3rd book. Above are a few shots of the pages I have drawn for him. I am grateful to have the opportunity to create these memory books for him.

A studio date with my son

This Wednesday afternoon my son asked me to paint with him in the studio. He has a painting easel set up next to mine in my studio. So down we went into the painting studio, we adorned our smocks, put some tunes on and began the painting adventure. For about 30 minutes we painted and chatted away. Dipping our brushes in the water and discussing what colour we are each using next. After all was said and done we hung our completed works and went back upstairs to make cookies. These kinds of days are the best days in the studio, especially when followed by cookies. Here is a picture of our easels and completed works. The cookies were good too!
